A good housekeeping is also needed by your PC. Overtime, it accumulates little tidbits of unneeded data stored in your PC that you are most likely unaware.

1. Enter CCLEANER:

Malware on the Rise

A Malware is a program that behaves like a virus. These software programs are pretty annoying and sometimes destructive if continues to run.

What are the signs that you have a any in your system?

your pc slows down as it do normally

you cannot access popular websites, ex. yahoo, google, FB, etc.

a popup appeared that says you are infected, infiltrated, unsecure, etc.

...and many other tactics to invade your PC

What to do?

Use firefox: I am a fan. It restricts running activeX application. ActiveX is a program that runs using your browser. It could do a lot of things depending on the program application.

Disable pop-ups: These are the ones that asks consent to run a malicious program.

put adblock addon: more info here.

And finally install and run the following FREE programs:

Notes:

the anti malware programs are the free version
keep a good antivirus (I commend ESET or Kaspersky)
do not active all the programs at one time.
Use it only when needed (regular maintenance ans check up)
after the scan, check if the infected files are really infected (false positive)
make a habit to regularly scan your PC

If you are doing online hunt for good deals, you need to clear your browser cookies. Some websites are tracking your browsing habits and tend to give you a higher price.

To give you an example, if you are looking for cheap air tickets and visit the same website several times a day. The website will know this by tracking a cookie.

I am unaware of this, but based on experience, online price changes from session to session on some 'tricky' websites.

Free International Roaming

First a note: This is based on an article a stumble upon some moments ago. I, personally hasn't tried this but theoretically should work.

If you have an Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) enabled phones like these. It is capable of making calls using the Wi-Fi access. Just be sure to turn off the your operator network access and use only wi-fi. This calling feature is called Wi-Fi calling which only consumes your regular calling minutes (on-air time) as if you are in your local network.

DNS Server

About two weeks ago, I was experiencing some DNS troubles. This was the instance that makes your browser to take time looking up the website that you want to go. Even if it is the popular ones like google and yahoo to name a few.

Thanks to the forums and blogs this issue was now solved. It was due to my ISPs DNS resolution. I then switched to OpenDNS servers and solved this problem.

All Digital/HDTV from Comcast

Because I was neither unaware/uninformed...

Did you know that(depending on your subscription), you can get all digital/HD channels from Comcast?

Try tuning in to the 600+ channel numbers from your HD cable box.
It appears that the broadcasting channel show HD when available in these channels.

What I am looking for is the clear QAM (HD-ATSC) channels so as to justify putting up the HTPC in place of the cable box. Though that is not going to happen due to cablecard issues, there is an ample online HD streaming sources, and growing. The TV card can tune in to OTA HD/Digital channels come July 2009 the least.

These are the my reasons.

Relatively small display screen. At 13" it is a sweet size, anything bigger than that, ill go for a desktop.
back-lighted keyboard, if you like to stay on facebook late at night, this feature may come in handy.
Latest, fastest processor available for a laptop at this category.
Edge to edge display makes cleaning a breeze

What I don't like:

Obstructed vent, due to display hinge design
Slot DVD drive, I still prefer the drawer type since I have a few smaller size DVD camcorder discs.
*EXPENSIVE* at a price level of US$1500, this is the turn off.

I'll buy it at the outlet website when my current laptop raises a white flag. A few days ago, this item was priced at about US$700 with Dell coupon. may still bring down the price when this item hits mainstream.

T-Mobile Account: Block Spam

I had received several unsolicited messages to my handset. These messages are those which came from four digit service numbers, usually starts with 3###.

I do not have messaging plan so every time I receive this messages I incur 20¢ up from 15¢ since last month. So I called t-mobile (that was like four months ago) and asked them to block SMS (txt messaging) totally. He said that they cannot do that since SMS is an inherent feature of the GSM system. But I had doubts about that.

Just recently I found the answer. I went to my account online (T-Mobile website) and under my account, there is a change plan option. In there you can customize your account to your liking. Some at a cost and some are free. Here’s a screen shot of what I am talking about.

You need to know some account holder specifics to confirm the changes on the account.
I didn’t know when t-mobile added this feature selection. I just came to that page to explore my account…

I think this particular function is a handicapped Google chrome feature: The ability to block ads

As everybody knows, a major contributing part for the billion USD revenue of Google is through online advertisements. Blocking it will be similar to denying oneself of existence. Although there are other source of revenues, this is just my opinion.

I am a happy Firefox user and the adblock function is doing its job most of the time. But adblock plugin isn't perfect, it may block a particular portion (or script) that contains its blocking keyword. This is all up to the user to tune up to its taste.

Google is a supporter of open source so thanks to their effort it wouldnt be long for a third party app to be loaded. In relation to this item, you can read from this article.

I got several online hangouts that did not succeed on their endeavors. For what reason, I don't know, perhaps failure to generate enough revenue to support themselves or it is not attractive enough to advertisers.

ALO pictures is closing their service by the end of this year, December 31, 2008, They had partnered with American Greetings Photoworks to continue the service but you have to transfer your pictures. OLS website is offering assistance on transferring your photos.

There are also other sites that didn't succeed AFAIK, a lot in fact. But I know only those that I happen to join. One such casualty is Narple. Although there are failure, there are also successes, most of them are social start up that evolved to a multi functional fun to browse with webpages.

ORBIT Downloader

I am one of the happy users of mozillas Firefox 3. I have also loaded some of its useful add-ons that I frequently use specially in downloading files from the net. I believe that Internet Explorer (IE) cannot surpass that 'add-ons flavor' of Firefox (FF). Among those add-ons that I have installed is down them all and video download helper which sits on the top of themost popular FF download add-ons.

I have found out that the add-ons I installed is not capable of downloading flash media in one step. It needs few more steps and the speed is horrible.

Here is my first impression, I only used it today and I find it very useful though it has some pros and cons as to what I observed. I listed it down as follows:

Cons:
Orbit is a stand alone program which loads into the system memory at start-up. But you have an option to run it as needed (I did). For this program to work, you have to open the Grab++ window, and to get, you open the main program window. After your session you need to terminate the Orbit process to free up the used resources which is about ~8MB. The memory used is about average as compared to other windows programs.

I liked it better than dTA and video download helper combined.

Install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

Did you know that you can update your Windows XP to service pack 3?

Heres how:
1. Download the install file from ZDnet here.
2. Close all your running programs. If you can stop any not needed process, that would help.
3. Install the executable file that you just downloaded.
4. Restart windows

That's it, you got WXP SP3!

It works seamlessly on my machine. My installation process took about 15-17 minutes, I have a single core 2Ghz laptop. You may encounter other issues but thankfully, the installation process has created a restore point that you can fall back if something goes wrong.

One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington, D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument
.

With all the uproar about removing the Ten Commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this amazing historical information.

On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. , are displayed two words: Laus Deo.

No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history , you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say 'Praise be to God!'

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States , it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo 'Praise be to God!'

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.

Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message.

Plus the local HD OTA (over the air) broadcast channels. As you can see here, the channels have decimals meaning they are 'direct' broadcast digital channels. You need to auto tune your ATSC tuner to get this channels. Your mileage may vary and this is not permanent programming meaning comcast can change the line up anytime. You may need to rescan the channels to find out more. I am not sure if they are uncompressed or not, but its is on HD.

Nice to have - Nokia N95

This item is one on my nice to have list, but keeping on mind that 'buy what you need and not what you want' fact and no budget for that mentality, I can still live with my Motorola RAZR that can still serve its purpose.

I am just putting this item on my gadget line up. It is currently twice the price of Apple iPhone for reasons that I am not so much aware of. Although there are already reviews and direct comparison, I am a fan of Symbian OS and familiar with its 'user friendly' menus. That is why my preference is still with Nokia. Another reason is the 5 Megapixel photos and the built in GPS. Yes, the Apple iPhone has a very good screen size and resolution but I am not fond of listening to portable movies and music.

Besides the main function of these gadget is to make and recieve calls, in that aspect Nokia has the edge since it is a quad band enabled meaning you can roam to other countries without a problem. Youll never get lost too, since you have a GPS, just need to use a little common sense, a sense that is not common to all!

So that's it, Im sticking to N95! (at least for now...)

Yes you can retrieve your emails using outlook and outlook express. And not only that, it can support even other email client programs listed here. Outlook express is the email client program that comes with microsoft windows.

Heres how:

1. Download the ypops program. This is the program that communicate with your yahoo account from the internet. Think of it as your email carrier. It fetches your new emails from your mailbox and delivers your outgoing emails.

2. Install ypops. Set it and forget it. It even looks for a newer version. Read more on the instructions on how to install ypops.

3. Set your email account in outlook/outlook express.

I am more comfortable in using the email client than accessing the webmail, but thats me. Your preference maybe different, anyway thatnks for reading my blog.

Well if you answer yes to all that items, you can try to 'surf' ATSC (digital) channels from 71.1 to 84.10.

Actually what I thought of this is that some of my neighbor has rented a pay-per-view programs and I was able to see it. So the completion of the program is at the hands of the renter. Meaning if they pause, stop, FF, REW what is being shown, you can see the same action too. Also, you do not have the exact time of when the show starts. If you happen to caught the beginning of the show and the renter finishes it. You are in luck, if not, it is otherwise. If you dont like it, just go watch sesame street at PBS. Or you can buy your own PPV.

I do not know how it is done, I just watch. There are different shows that are being watched so all you have to do is catch them.

A little note beside, if you have little kids, be careful in channel surfing because you know what are the'shows' that are being shown in PPV. It may be a little early for them to watch. ;P

Well how about that!?!

I am talking about this, Airlink AGIGA8SW-B. Just got one and all I can say is it is good for the price, After rebate that is. Actually the whole cost is about 50 bucks including S&H. But after the rebate the cost drops down to about 10 bucks. The shipping and handling is not free though that why it is not 'exactly' 3 bucks.

I am not promoting in any way this product or seller, I am just sharing this info for other people to save some green.

This switch performs as it should and no driver to be installed. All you got to have is an extra ethernet cable since it is not included in the deal.

Pros:

Supports jumbo frame

quiet operation

cheap (You have to get the rebate though)

Cons:

How many email accounts do you have?
Two, three, four maybe more and from different popular free internet email providers.

How do you access each of them?
Surf the different websites then login, one account after another...

I have an easier way of doing it. It just takes a little bit of reading the FAQ and help files on setting and configuring it up.

In the scale of difficulty in doing it, I say three with five as the hardest.

So here it goes =====

Have you read about "Thunderbird"?
This is an email client software and the good news is it is FREE. Thanks to the guys in Mozilla for their hardwork in developing this. All you got to do is download the software and install it. Then register your POP accounts and voila! You can read your email in one client.

Now, I said that this is all in one. What I meant by that is that you can read email and news, not to mention RSS as well. Now, to get email from non POP email providers like Yahoo and Hotmail and other web based emails, you need to load this Webmail add-on. Also download the specific provider add-on.

With the case of Gmail and AOL related service, you dont need the add-on. Thunderbird can fetch your emails right from its configuration settings. Same as true with Netscape email.

You need to load the extension for Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to fetch your email.

Heres the steps I did:
1. Download and install Mozilla Thunderbird.
2. Download the Webmail add-on.
3. Download your specific email provider add-on.
4. open thunderbird and load the Webmail add-on by selecting tools > add-ons
5. Click install, select the saved webmail file.
6. Restart thunderbird
7. Load your email provider extension by selecting tools > add-ons > install
8. Restart thunderbird, repeat procedure for each different email provider listed.
9 Configure you email account, refer to your email account and server settings.
10 Make sure the webmail service add-on is running and you account is properly defined.

Some limitations are there like if your email service provider is not (yet)supported, for corporate emails as an example. I do not have corporate email account so I cant comment on that aspect.

I compared Thunderbird with Outlook in terms of memory usage. Thunderbird uses smaller memory resource, 65 MB as compared to the latters > 100MB. Thats a few chunks spare for use of other programs/services.

Thats it! You can read all (if not, most) of your emails from the free popular internet email providers around.

PS I may have missed some more specific item, all you need to do is read the help file or the FAQs.
